SansCulture (1998-99)

by Ewan Stefani

/

about

SansCulture contains overt usage of basic elements taken from contemporary popular music: sampled percussion, bass phrases, synthesized percussion sounds and ostinato patterns. What interested me was the idea of taking such ingredients from one musical genre and transplanting them into an alien soundscape of my own personal design. I wanted to create a genre-less music, or a musical environment that is consciously moving in and out of experimental and popular genres. My treatment of the samples and patterns is intended to sound ‘objective’ to the listener, as though each event has been crafted and used like any concrete sound objects in other pieces.

SansCulture was commissioned by Sonic Arts Network and was premiered at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London as part of 'Sonic Concrete' (19th - 21st March 1999).
