Beginnings (2005)

by Ewan Stefani

/

about

My preoccupation in this work is with avoiding conclusions and denial of mortality. The implicit underlying theme throughout the work, although never stated, is a quote from the poem Visiting Hour by Norman McCaig:
'I will not feel, I will not feel, until I have to'.

Rather than confront deep emotion, the focus is upon description and observation. However, it is never possible to indefinitely avoid the truth.

The voice guides the audience through a series of false beginnings that lead to only another introduction, rather than to a meaningful development.

Pitched material is based on the Overture from Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.

Extracts from texts include: Lawrence Durrell’s Bitter Lemons, Charles Dickens’ Bleak House, Laurie Lee’s Cider With Rosie, Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man, John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row and Elspeth Barker’s O Caledonia. Readings by Elsa.

This work was composed between January and April 2005.
